EQ’s Lisa Picard Imparts Leadership in a Digital Economy

By Dennis Kaiser

The NAIOP SoCal Young Professionals Group (YPG) is hosting its third annual Leadership Summit on March 28th at Hotel Irvine. The in-depth discussion will cover how to become a stronger and more effective leader. The focus for this year is on leadership in a digital economy. The event will feature a keynote by Kevin Harrington, a successful entrepreneur and one of the Original Sharks from the ABC Emmy-winning show, Shark Tank.

The Summit also features a presentation by EQ Office President and CEO Lisa Picard. She leads culture, vision and strategy for the company, and works to inspire her team to find creative solutions that challenge past assumptions and helps customers identify new pathways for success. Connect Media asked Picard to share a few insights leading up to the event in our latest 3 CRE Q&A.

Q: How do you define leadership?
A:
Leaders are necessary when the terrain is unknown and skill is necessary to navigate people through change. I mean if you are familiar with hiking up a trail in all conditions, why do you need a leader. A leader also doesn’t carry a person up a hill when it gets difficult, the leader inspires the hiker to take each step… hopefully giving motivation and excitement for the next… providing a vision of the top but also loving the journey along the way.

Q: What will be a key takeaway from your presentation?
A:
I find that people take away different things, no matter what topic I speak upon. But mostly, I hope people will see that authentic leadership, one that is vulnerable, empathic, is exactly what the world craves today.

Q: What is your message for the next generation as they look to build leadership skills?
A:
Leadership skills aren’t taught, they are learned. To learn them, you must be curious about other people, cultures, businesses, industries. Everyone has something to teach you. Everyone has power.
