Environment Texas: Wind, Solar Power Production Increasing

When picturing the words “energy” and “Texas,” the most widespread image is that of oil rigs and natural gas pipelines. However, the Lone Star State has been making huge strides in boosting its solar and wind power production during the past decade. According to Environment Texas’ report “Renewables on the Rise: A decade of Progress Positions America for a 100% Renewable Future,” Texas has boosted its wind-generated power by 410%, and its solar-generated power by a whopping 38,510%.

Texas also did well when it came to adding energy storage, ending up with a battery capacity of 82.9 MW in 2017.

However, not all is good on the renewable energy front in Texas. “Progress has stalled on energy-efficiency programs by private utilities, and more work is needed to take advantage of the potential from energy storage and demand response,” said Cyrus Reed with the Sierra Club’s Lone Star Chapter.
