Energy Transfer Tries Again – in Louisiana
Less than 24 hours after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a permit for a controversial pipeline project to run through North Dakota, owner Energy Transfer Partners LP is trying again, in Louisiana. The Bayou Bridge Pipeline project is a 162-mile pipeline that would cut through the Atchafalaya Basin and 11 Louisiana parishes. The pipeline would connect the North Dakota oilfields to Louisiana’s refineries and ports.
Resistance, however, is growing against this pipeline as well. Environmental groups, land owners and citizens have joined forces to amass signatures from as far away as New Zealand and South Africa. The upshot is that the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the USACE issued a notice of a public hearing on water quality permits, scheduled for 6 p.m., Jan. 12.
