Emanuel Awaits Scouting Visit by Amazon Team

Although details are few, due to non-disclosure agreements between Amazon and the Emanuel administration, Chicago is anticipating a visit that a scouting team from the e-commerce giant apparently will pay on Wednesday or Thursday of this week, as the company weighs possible locations for its second headquarters. Chicago was shortlisted as a contender for Amazon’s HQ2 this past January.

The city’s bid for HQ2 offered Amazon about $2.25 billion in tax incentives to build here, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. The bid also suggested 10 possible locations, including suburban sites in Schaumburg and Oak Brook.

The Chicago Tribune reported Monday that Mayor Emanuel has kept tabs on public perceptions of the city’s chances to land HQ2 ever since Amazon announced the RFP in September. When the Tribune published an editorial downplaying the city’s competitiveness on criteria Amazon said it would consider, a spokesman for the mayor fired back. “The city is not shy about letting people know when we disagree with the Tribune’s editorial board,” mayoral spokesman Grant Klinzman said.
