El Paso School District Buys Land, Plans New Building
Members of the El Paso Independent School District school board have given the go ahead for the district to acquire an 80,000-square-foot building at 1100 N. Stanton from El Paso Community College. The building will be the El Paso ISD’s new home, with the district planning to spend $30 million renovating the building, and developing additional offices on a 1.5-acre lot across the street. The building itself is selling for $3.2 million.
Approximately 800 employees will make the move to the new space by May 2019. But because not all staffers will fit into the downtown location, some departments will end up in other areas across the city. The renovation means the district will have to call on its $121.8 million in reserves.
The vote for the acquisition did not pass unanimously, however. Two trustees who voted against it pointed out the EPISD already owns land that is large enough for the entire district operation.
