Edinburg Ensures Downtown Locale for County Courthouse
The city of Edinburg, TX helped guarantee that a $150 million Hidalgo County Courthouse would end up in its back yard. Specifically, the new building will go north next to the existing courthouse at 101 N. Closner Blvd., in downtown, Edinburg. Both the city council and Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure the building will go north downtown. Edinburg is the seat of Hidalgo County.
Prior to the MOU’s approval, issues included Edinburg’s financial commitment, specifically, that the county was comfortable with the funds, and that the city would not have to contribute more than $30 million to the effort.
The proposed courthouse is being coordinated around Edinburgh’s Downtown Master Plan, which was approved by the Edinburg Economic Development Corp. in 2010.
