EDC’s Board Okays Steiner Studios Project

The de Blasio administration is moving forward with the major film and TV studio it has planned for Sunset Park, Brooklyn, despite calls from the community to delay the process to allow neighborhood input, Crain’s New York Business reported.

At its meeting Wednesday, the New York City Economic Development Corp. board voted to approve the 500,000-square-foot production hub from Steiner Studios. The agency announced in August that it had reached a deal with Steiner to develop the facility.

Brooklyn Community Board 7 and a separate group of Sunset Park residents both sent letters to the EDC, asking the agency to delay its vote on the project. The EDC didn’t grant the requests, though, saying it had listened to the community throughout the planning process, reported Crain’s.

Earlier in September, another major Sunset Park project—the expansion of Industry City—was scrapped when the complex’s owners withdrew their rezoning proposal.
