Economists See Next Recession Starting in 2020
The next recession will likely begin in 2020, according to a poll of more than 100 housing experts and economists conducted by Seattle-based Zillow. The firm’s quarterly Zillow Home Price Expectations Survey found that 50% of the respondents expect a recession to get underway sometime next year, with another 35% saying it’ll happen in 2021.
In contrast to the housing-driven 2008 recession, Zillow’s experts said the most likely cause for the next one is trade policy, with a stock market correction in second place and a geopolitical crisis ranked third. Only a few experts think that a housing slowdown will be a significant factor in causing the next recession.
“Housing slowdowns have been a major component, if not catalyst, for economic recessions in the past, but that won’t be the case the next time around, primarily because housing will have worked out its kinks ahead of time,” said Zillow’s Skylar Olsen.
