E-Commerce Means More and Smaller Warehouses

Connect Industrial is coming up on July 11 in Chicago. Here’s a link for more information about the conference and to register.

Parcel shipment volume rose by 7% in 2017 to nearly $100 billion with growth driven by e-commerce, the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals said Tuesday. The Lombard, IL-based group’s annual State of Logistics Report cited a number of effects this is having on the supply chain, including a need for more warehousing that often is smaller and closer to large population centers.

The annual CSCMP report, produced by Chicago-based management consulting firm A.T. Kearney, looked ahead to concepts that are likely to have high impact in the next decade. They include the “uberization” of freight; blockchain; fully autonomous trucks; artificial intelligence applications; truck platooning; electric vehicle fleets; autonomous mobile robots; and drone and unmanned aerial vehicle delivery systems.

“The demand-supply balance shifted much more dramatically this year when compared to last year,” said Sean Monahan, A.T. Kearney partner and report co-author.
