DTLA’s Population Paints a Positive Picture
A 2015 Downtown Los Angeles Survey Report, prepared by Beacon Economics for the Downtown Center Business Improvement District, tells a positive story of a community on the rise with far-reaching effects. According to the report, tourism is at a four-year high with hotel occupancy reaching 78%, development is rampant, and hip bars and eateries inundate the city’s blocks.
With data from the Office of Finance, the report takes a fresh look at DTLA’s community, prioritizing behaviors and attitudes over growth. When looking at the population that lives in the area and (lives/work) in the area, key takeaways include:
Live and (live/work)
- Median age = 38 (live/work= 37)
- College educated= 76 % (live/work= 80%)
- Median income= $96.6k (live/work= $99.9k)
- Married= 32% (live/work= 37%)
- Cohabitate= 20% (live/work= 16%)
- Have kids= 11% (live/work= 17%)
Of those who live/work in DTLA, 62% walk to work, which is a beacon of hope in a city where traffic never sleeps.
The residential population is around 58,000 – 43% male and 57% female. There are 34,500 residential units in DTLA, with thousands more springing to life.
DCBID President and CEO Carol Shatz, is most enamored by the statistics that show 80% of people say they are passionate about DTLA, and 73% of inhabitants feel like they are a part of the community.
