DPS to Cannabis Dispensaries: Never Mind

Less than a month after opening the permitting application process to new cannabis licensees, the Texas Department of Public Safety abruptly halted applications for permitting.

According to the DPS website, “The Department’s Compassionate Use Program is not accepting applications at this time.” No reason for halting the application process was given; previous indications were that the application process would be open from Oct. 1-Nov. 1, 2019.

State Rep. Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, said she thought the removal of the licensing application from the DPS’ website was temporary. Klick, who spearheaded legislation to expand the Compassionate Use Act, indicated to the Texas Tribune that the delay could be, in part, due to knowledge of “which of the incurable degenerative conditions are appropriate to be included on the (compassionate use) list.”
