Downtown Bus Station Sells for $161M
King County Metro, in Washington State, struck a tentative deal with the Washington State Convention Center to sell a downtown Seattle bus station for $161 million. The station would be sold to help make more space for the $1.6 billion convention center’s expansion project. The Convention Place Station, below street level, is anticipated to close in late September 2018.
The deal would mean six Metro routes and Sound Transit’s 550 Bellevue-Seattle line end up on surface streets. Local governments are negotiating potential bus-lane additions. Busses were planned to be ousted from the tunnel by mid-2020, to allow for more train traffic.
The $161 million would be paid, with interest, over a 32-year period, and be applied to service within the long-term Metro Connects plan.
