Douglaston Moves Forward with Seattle Tower after Legal Fight
Douglaston Development said it will move forward on its long-planned 48-story residential tower, following a Washington state Supreme Court decision. The court declined to hear an appeal from Escala Owners Association against Douglaston’s hotel and apartment project on Fifth Avenue, clearing the way for the project to proceed.
The Puget Sound Business Journal reports the Escala group was trying to get Douglaston to set the tower farther off the alley, as space between buildings in Seattle has become a sticking point. A lawyer representing the group said sacrificing sunlight and trees in the name of density, will become a regrettable decision.
Douglaston, meanwhile, says the project will bring much needed energy and foot traffic to the Fifth Avenue and Virginia Street area of downtown Seattle as well as provide million in funds towards the city’s affordable housing and childcare incentives. The building, which will be adjacent to a planned 54-story Stanford Hotel, will also offer retail and restaurant spaces.
