Divvy Bike-Share Expands to Far South Side
The Chicago Department of Transportation recently launched an expansion of its Divvy bike-share program to the Far South Side, with the installation of a bike station in the Chatham neighborhood, the first of what will be 66 bike stations in the area. The expansion will grow the program’s coverage by nearly 60 square miles, according to CDOT.
“This South Side expansion is a critical first step in our citywide expansion,” CDOT Commissioner Gia Biagi said Thursday. “We’ll help re-connect neighborhoods and strengthen the recovery, particularly in communities hit hard by the pandemic.”
The installation of bike stations will be accompanied by the addition of 16.5 miles of new bike lanes on the Far South Side. Mary Lori Lightfoot tweeted that the expansion would provide “transportation options that lower costs, pollution and congestion.”
The Divvy program is operated for the city by Lyft under a revenue-sharing agreement.
