Dillard’s to Take Over Former Sears Space
As Sears Holdings announces bankruptcy and the closure of more than 700 Sears and Kmart stores nationwide, Simon Property Group, owner of the 622,000-squre-foot Midland Park Mall in Midland, TX, is preparing to relocate one if its anchors, Dillard’s to an empty Sears store on site. Simon Property Group wanted to relocate the Dillard’s earlier, however, the city of Midland held the building permit, pending a traffic study.
The city’s concern was that expansions taking place at the mall, located at Midkiff Road and the Loop 250 service road, was creating more traffic congestion. The proposed Dillard’s addition would have increased the square footage of the existing mall building, so the city’s Engineering and Traffic Operations placed a hold on the permit until the traffic study was finalized.
The city council recently authorized the city manager to execute an agreement with the developer that will end the back-and-forth discussions, and commence the relocation. The Midland Park Mall Sears closed in April 2018.
