Development OK’d for Former Detroit Store Site
Detroit’s Downtown Development Authority tentatively approved a mixed-use development on the site of the former J.L. Hudson Co. department store. The two-acre parcel in downtown Detroit is owned by billionaire Dan Gilbert.
The new building would include 225,000 square feet of commercial, retail and community gathering space. The project would also offer 250 apartments. Construction could begin as early as April 2017, and conclude by spring 2020.
The DDDA’s approval means an affiliate of Gilbert can acquire the city-owned parking garage on site for $15 million, which would pave the way for construction. The two-acre land transfer is subject to approval by the Detroit city council, and the financial review commission set up to monitor the city’s finances following its bankruptcy.
