Developers Wanted for Public Housing Parking Lot
A parking lot at the Cooper Park Houses (pictured), a public housing community in Brooklyn’s East Williamsburg neighborhood, is likely to become a new residential tower where half the apartments will have lower, affordable rents and half of the apartments will rent at high, unrestricted market rates.
Money raised by allowing the new development will contribute millions of dollars to repairs at Cooper Park and other public housing properties.
“Residents at Cooper Park Houses will benefit from overdue repairs and new community resources to improve their quality of life,” said Shola Olatoye, chair and CEO of the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). The Authority is facing $17 billion in infrastructure needs throughout its portfolio. At Cooper Park Houses, there is $59 million in capital needs alone.
NYCHA is reaching out to residents at the Cooper Park. Their priorities and concerns will be written into a formal request for proposals to potential developers.
