Developers on Trial for Painting Over Graffiti
More than 20 graffiti artists are suing Jerry and David Wolkoff because in 2013 the developers suddenly painted over the hundreds of tags and murals that covered the walls of the 5Pointz building in Long Island City in Queens, NY.
Since the 1990s, the Wolkoffs had an informal agreement that allowed the artists to paint walls, making the empty building a famous tourist attraction. The Wolkoffs are developing two giant rental towers on the site, having demolished 5Pointz in 2014.
The artists allege the Wolkoffs didn’t provide the proper 90-day notice that would have allowed the artists to salvage their work, according to coverage in Curbed.
