Developers Launch Blue Flame Building Renovation

The Housing Authority of the City of El Paso commenced renovation activities on the Blue Flame Building, an 18-story building that was once headquarters for El Paso Natural Gas. The building at 100 N. Stanton St. in downtown El Paso has been gutted, and work will begin on creating a mixed-use project with office and retail space, and 120 low-income apartments. Additionally, the price tag, originally pegged at $40 million, is now $50 million.

The 21-foot steel-and-Plexiglas blue flame that tops the building will also be renovated. While the design will remain the same, LED lights will replace the current fluorescent tubes, and the lights will be computerized.

The renovation is part of the housing authority’s ongoing Rental Assistance Demonstration Program. The $1.3 billion, multiyear program is charged with rebuilding more than 30 public housing complexes totaling 6,400 units.
