Almeda Mall

Developer Transforming Former Houston Macy’s Store

Read King wants to turn part of the Almeda Mall into an indoor marketplace with a grocery store, restaurants and a fitness center. The new venture will be called The Market at Almeda Mall. The project includes the building that formerly housed the Macy’s store, which closed when Macy’s closed 66 stores across the country earlier this year.

The Houston Business Journal reports that Read King bought the 23-acre Macy’s property last year. The property is a 290,000-square-foot store shell along with parking and empty land across the street.

The company is in negotiations with a grocer, a fitness center and a beauty school for the new marketplace.

The grocery store would take up about 65,000 square feet on the first floor. The plan is to lease about 44,000 square feet on the second floor to tenants and use the remaining upstairs square footage for utility space.

The remaining part of Almeda Mall features a dozen retailers, including Foot Locker, Men’s Factory, and Bath & Body Works, along with a food court.
