Developer Says South Works MXU Plan is Still a Go
Days after Barcelona Housing Works (BHS) told the Chicago Tribune that plans to redevelop U.S. Steel’s former South Works facility were on hold due to soil contamination problems, the lead developer said the project was still on track. Further, a statement from Ireland-based Emerald Living said that BHS was no longer part of the mixed-use project, which would include up to 20,000 modular housing units.
Emerald Living said it “remains very committed to the New South Works project and Chicago.” BHS played an advisory role in “master-planning initiatives” on the MXU but hadn’t been on the project team for months, according to the statement.
The Emanuel administration announced last August that a purchase and sale agreement had been signed for the sale of the 440-acre site. Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the agreement “a major milestone” toward creating “a vibrant community that will contribute to Chicago’s economic, cultural and recreational future.”
