Detroit City Council Okays Amazon Project at Former Fairgrounds

Detroit City Council recently approved a development proposal that would bring a $400-million Amazon distribution center to the former Michigan State Fairgrounds.

The Detroit Free Press reported that construction could start in the coming weeks on the 3.8-million-square-foot distribution center planned by the Sterling Group and Hillwood Investment Properties. It’s projected to create 1,200 full-time jobs when completed.

As part of the deal, the developers will pay for a $7-million Detroit Department of Transportation transit center, according to the Free Press. The fairgrounds site has sat idle since 2009.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan praised the deal in an emailed statement, and thanked City Council and residents for their support.

“Attracting large employment centers like this is a major part of our strategy to lift more Detroit families out of poverty and rebuild our city’s middle class,” Duggan told the Free Press.
