Detroit Approves New Pistons HQ, Training Facility in Downtown

The Detroit Pistons basketball team received approval to move its corporate headquarters and practice facility to a site in downtown Detroit. The development agreement, MOU and a $20-million brownfield redevelopment tax package for new facilities were approved by the city council.

Those actions pave the way for the NBA team to relocate all of its operations from an arena facility in Auburn Hills, closer to a new arena under-construction. The $58-million, 128,000-square-foot Pistons multi-use facility will house team offices, training, practice, and locker space, and is part of a larger Henry Ford-Detroit Pistons Performance Center. The facility could open in time for the 2018-19 basketball season.

Proponents say the downtown arena and related facility developments are exactly what’s needed to help spur economic activity and continue the momentum toward Detroit’s recovery. The team has spent nearly 30 years at the Palace of  Auburn Hills, roughly 30 miles north of Detroit.
