Despite Decline in Home Starts, D-FW Still Ranks No. 1 in U.S.
The Dallas-Fort Worth area remained atop the single-family home starts list in Q3 2019, according to data released by housing analyst Metrostudy. During the quarter, builders launched construction on 33,572 homes on an annualized basis. Houston came in second, with 29,435 home starts. Both metros have topped the list of the country’s busiest home-building markets for the past couple of years.
However, the number of starts in DFW declined by 3.5%, year over year, while growth in Houston’s starts was flat, at 0.2%. “We’re still number one, but we are seeing a flattening of starts across most markets, and some are down,” Metrostudy’s Paige Shipp told the Dallas Morning News.
Austin and San Antonio also made the top 10 for home starts; Austin, ranked No. 7, breaking ground on 17,562 single family homes (a 7.1% increase), while San Antonio, ranked No. 10, began construction on 13,135 homes, a 14.6% year-over-year jump.
