Dept. of Buildings Issues Guidelines for Restarting Construction Sites

With activity poised to resume at 33,556 non-essential construction sites citywide, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) has released new COVID-19 safety guidelines for property owners and contractors. The guidelines are accompanied by a requirement to develop site-specific health plans.

“As we restart the economic engine that is our construction industry, there is no excuse to abandon the social distancing and health measures that we know save lives,” said Buildings Commissioner Melanie E. La Rocca. “Our health and safety guidelines are crystal clear, and we will be out in force, sweeping every work site in the city, to ensure compliance.”

For the first 30 days after the guidelines are in effect, DOB will emphasize education, and no financial penalties will be imposed for non-compliance. After the initial 30-day period, non-compliance may result in fines and civil penalties, along with stop-work orders.
