Demolition Work Starts at SXSW’s New HQ Site

Austin’s South by Southwest festival acquired a two-story, 17,000-square-foot building at 1400 Lavaca St. in 2015. Two years later, demolition work on the building has begun, with plans calling for a 150,000, 12-story tower to replace it.

The building is scheduled for a 2019 completion. SXSW will relocate from its current spot at 400 Bowie St. to the top three floors, and will offer the remaining office space for lease. The new building is valued at approximately $41 million. Pei Cobb Freed & Partners and Gensler are the architects.

The previous owner of the Lavaca property was the Texas Restaurant Association, which has already relocated.
