Demolition Possible for Sunshine Cinema

Developers are now planning to demolish the historic Sunshine Cinema on 139 E. Houston St. on Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

New owners East End Capital and K Property Group have filed a demolition application with the city’s Department of Buildings to tear down the 108-year-old former vaudeville theater, according to reporting in The Lo-Down.

The demolition is not a certainty — but it is one of the possible plans for the theater. “East End is planning to re-develop the building into a mixed-use retail and office project. While pursuing tenants interested in utilizing the structure in its current form, work is also underway for a new, best-in-class office building with retail at the base,” according to the developers’ website.
