Demolition at Shuttered GM Plant Will Make Way for Logistics Center

Developer Harvey Hanna & Associates has secured permits to begin demolition work at the three-million-square-foot former General Motors assembly plan in Wilmington, DE. It marks the first step in redeveloping the facility into a modern business and distribution campus.

Earlier this year, Harvey Hanna filed plans with the county to build the new facility, which would be constructed in multiple phases. Plans call for the complete demolition of all dormant buildings on the 142-acre property, followed by the construction of three million square feet in new commercial space spread across four buildings with a lower overall footprint than the previous structure.

The developer expects demolition at the site, which was surrendered by GM after its 2009 bankruptcy filing, to take up to 12 months. The redevelopment “can serve as a new economic engine for the entire region,” said Harvey Hanna President Thomas J. Hanna.
