Deal with American Airlines Keeps O’Hare Expansion Poised for Takeoff
A deal between American Airlines and the city has resolved a dispute over gate allocations that jeopardized momentum on the Emanuel administration’s $8.5-billion expansion of O’Hare Airport. The airline had threatened to either file suit or reduce its operations at the airport over what it believed was an unfair competitive advantage given to rival United Airlines.
Instead, the compromise between the city and American will expedite the construction of three common-use gates available to any airline. Emanuel called the agreement “a watershed moment for Chicago” that will “generate billions of dollars in economic development and strengthen our city’s economy for generations.”
American CEO Doug Parker said Thursday that the expansion would “transform the airport experience for travelers, and allow American Airlines to continue to invest and grow in the city of Chicago.” Emanuel has pushed for quick approval by the City Council.
