D.C., MD, VA All Issue Stay-at-Home Orders

Washington, D.C.’s mayor and the governors of Maryland and Virginia all issued mandatory stay-at-home orders Monday, the Washington Post reported. The actions by Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser follow an escalation of social distancing directives as the coronavirus continues spreading in the DMV.

However, construction has yet to be categorized as a non-essential business, meaning that large development projects in the region may proceed during the pandemic. “We classified construction as essential, in alignment with federal guidelines,” a Hogan spokesman told the Washington Post.

Public officials across the U.S. have taken differing stances on the question, the Post reported. In Washington state, the transportation department suspended work on infrastructure projects, while in New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s order exempted infrastructure and transportation projects from a shutdown.

Boston’s mayor and Massachusetts’ governor also are at odds over whether to shut down construction.
