DC and Therme Group in Search for Flagship Wellness Resort Site

The District of Columbia (D.C.) has signed an agreement with the Therme Group, a Vienna-based wellness company, to search for a site to establish a “well-being resort” within the city. The agreement prevents the company from looking for sites in the suburbs of Maryland or Virginia for at least a year.

Therme has opened several locations in Europe and is expanding to Asia and Canada. It is planning to invest approximately $333 million in a planned waterfront resort in Toronto. The company is looking for other sites across the U.S., but D.C. is a priority in that search. The park would feature thermal bathing, sauna treatments, “family-friendly water-based features,” arts and cultural programming, and a health spa.

The D.C. government hopes the project will generate 7,200 construction jobs, 700 to 800 permanent jobs when completed, and $1.1bn in nominal tax revenue over 25 years.
