Dated Laguna Hills Mall Set to Become Destination Center
San Francisco-based Merlone Geier Partners gained city approval to revitalize Laguna Hills Mall and update the 68-acre property into a destination center, which will be renamed Five Lagunas.
Planned improvements include: 900 residences, a ShowPlace ICON luxury movie theater with 14 screens, a one-acre Sycamore Park with water feature, skylights, and saltwater fish tanks. The majority of the site will be converted to outdoor spaces with drought-friendly landscaping.
Since opening in 1973, significant capital improvements have not been made at Laguna Hills Mall, with the exception of minor updates in 1994. The property has been vexed with high vacancy rates and stiff nearby competition. Construction is slated to start this summer, with the first phase expected to be completed in 2018.
