Dallas to Buy Old Newspaper Campus

The building housing the onetime campus of the Dallas Morning News will likely be purchased by the City of Dallas. The Dallas Business Journal reports the city has voted to authorize the town to spend up to $51.7 million on the property. Charter Holdings initially bought the large newspaper campus in 2019 for $28 million.

Charter Holdings, the property owner, originally balked at the offer, saying it would instead sell to a data center operator. But the town said it would use eminent domain to take over the site. The 186,000-square-foot portion of land from the sale would allow the city to maintain its current redevelopment plans for the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center without having to work around the property.

Dallas voters overwhelmingly approved the $3.7 billion plan to build the convention center. The expansion will be funded from hotel tax revenue and will not impact local taxpayers.
