Daimler Trucks Lays Off 170, Weeks After HQ Completion
Less than two months after completing its new, $150 million headquarters on Portland’s Swan Island, Daimler Trucks North America announced it was temporarily laying off 170 workers from its Portland plant. The move is part of the company’s overall headcount reduction of 1,240 across North America. The company employs 2,000 in Portland.
The layoffs will be effective July 1. According to Daimler, the moves result from “a sustained reduction in orders and a diminished build rate.” The company expects a 15 percent decrease in one of its biggest categories over 2015 figures.
The laid-off workers will have first rights to be recalled when production increases.
