Daimler Truck Moving Oregon Assembly Operations to Carolinas
Daimler Truck is closing its assembly plant in Portland, Oregon and will move to plants in North Carolina and South Carolina. The move will result in the layoffs of 375 workers. It’s keeping its headquarters and testing facilities in Portland.
The Portland factory produces Freightliner and Western Star brands. The company already has a presence in High Point, North Carolina and Gaffney, South Carolina.
The Triad Business Journal reports that last year, Daimler Truck North America created Daimler Truck Specialty Vehicles by merging Thomas Built Buses of High Point with Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp., which is based in Gaffney, South Carolina. Freightliner makes the chassis that Thomas Built adds bus bodies to at its complex in High Point, as well as chassis for RVs, certain commercial trucks, shuttle buses, and walk-in vans.
The combined unit will have nearly 3,000 employees — about 1,900 at Thomas Built Buses and more than 1,000 in Gaffney.
