Cyber Attack Shuts Down Pipeline Data System

The third-party electronic data interchange for Energy Transfer Partners LP’s pipeline data system was attacked and will be shut down until further notice. The EDI, provided by Energy Services Group LLC, conducts business via computer-to-computer exchange of documents with customers. No data was compromised, and the attack didn’t impact operations outside of the EDI.

The attack, however, could impact pipelines owned by Dallas-headquartered Energy Transfer subsidiaries, including Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Co., Transwestern Pipeline Co. LLC and Rover Pipeline LLC.

Though it’s uncertain who, or what, was responsible for the attack, U.S. officials warned in March 2018 that Russian hackers are assaulting the U.S.’ electric grid and other targets.
