CushWake Brokers Sale of Library Association HQ

The American Library Association (ALA) has sold its headquarters buildings at 50 E. Huron and 40 E. Huron in River North, in a deal brokered by Cushman & Wakefield. Terms weren’t disclosed.

ALA plans a spring 2020 move for its Chicago-based functions to Michigan Plaza at 225 N. Michigan Ave. The association has occupied 50 E. Huron since 1963; it added 40 E. Huron in 1981.

In September 2018, ALA put its headquarters up for sale after working with Cushman & Wakefield to evaluate its workplace requirements.  Cushman & Wakefield’s assessment showed that the current headquarters configuration, on multiple floors in two buildings, makes collaboration difficult and potentially stymies innovation.

“Of course, it is bittersweet to be leaving our home of so many decades,” said ALA president Wanda Brown. “But ALA is focused on the future and is optimistic about all that it holds.”
