Cuomo Extends Eviction Moratorium Until Sept. 4

The eviction moratorium protecting New Yorkers during the coronavirus pandemic has been extended another 30 days. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order Wednesday night extending protections for tenants who’ve been struggling to pay rent, the New York Post reported.
The existing ban was due to expire at midnight Wednesday, potentially affecting as many as 400,000 families in New York City alone.

“The order signed last night continued provisions giving the courts and litigants the leeway to suspend deadlines related to civil litigation,” a Cuomo spokesman said Thursday. “How and if they use this authority when it comes to eviction proceedings is up to them.”

The New York State Office of Court Administration hadn’t announced by late Thursday afternoon whether it would continue to suspend deadlines.

At an unrelated news conference Thursday, Cuomo said tenants would continue to be safe from eviction “as long as we’re in the epidemic.”
