Cuomo Extends Ban on Commercial Evictions Until Oct. 20

New York State’s moratorium on COVID-related commercial evictions and foreclosures has been extended an additional month, until Oct. 20. The executive order signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo marks the third extension for the moratorium originally announced on March 20; a similar freeze on residential evictions remains in effect.

Cuomo said Monday that the extension of the moratorium gives commercial tenants and mortgagors, including retail establishments and restaurants, additional time to catch up on rent or mortgages, or to renegotiate lease terms to avoid foreclosure moving forward.

“The pandemic remains far from over, and we need to continue protecting the business owners supporting their families amid restrictions necessary to protect the public health,” said Cuomo. “That’s why it’s the right decision to extend the eviction ban for commercial tenants another 30 days.”
