Cuomo Aims to Expand Penn Station Capacity

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is backing a plan to expand Penn Station’s capacity by acquiring the block south of the station and adding eight tracks. The tracks would accommodate an additional 175,000 passengers per day, on top of the 650,000 already using the overcrowded station.

“The problem with Penn Station is the functionality, the track capacity,” Cuomo said Monday at a luncheon hosted by the Association for a Better New York.

He added, “We believe the best alternative is to expand by acquiring the block south of Penn Station and increasing the footprint that way.”

The expansion, which may also entail converting the Theater at Madison Square Garden into a new entrance on Eighth Avenue, would be part of the Cuomo administration’s Empire Station Complex plan.

The complex would also include Moynihan Train Hall at the Farley Post Office across the street. The original Penn Station was demolished in the 1960s.
