Culinary Food Hub to Transform Englewood Firehouse
Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined Englewood community members Tuesday to break ground on Englewood Connect, a $13.9-million culinary food hub that’s restoring the landmark Engine Co. 84 firehouse in the South Side’s Englewood neighborhood as a commercial kitchen and event space.
“I am thrilled to break ground on our city’s latest INVEST South/West project,” said Lightfoot. “Englewood Connect and the many other investments we are making in our communities will ensure that Englewood residents have abundant opportunities to live, work, and play in their neighborhood.”
The McLaurin Development Partners and Farpoint Development project at 6204 S. Green St. is repurposing the Tudor-style firehouse, built in 1929, as a 9,000-square-foot culinary center and business incubator that’s expected to employ more than 45 people. A landscaped public plaza adjacent to the building will host special events and other neighborhood activities.
