CUF: Tourism Needs a Seat at NYC’s Economic Development Table

Investment in the region’s transportation infrastructure is one of the key focal points in the Center for an Urban Future’s recommendations on ensuring that the city’s tourism economy continues to grow. “New York has had tremendous success over the past two decades in attracting record numbers of tourists,” according to a CUF report. “But, although the city has benefited enormously from this growth, policymakers have done little to plan around it.”

Without much help from policymakers, tourism has become one of the four most important sectors driving the city’s economy, the report stated. Longer term, though, “tourism needs to become a larger part of the city’s economic development strategy.”

The report recommends developing a five-year plan around tourism. This calls for a joint effort among the city’s Economic Development Corporation, marketing arm NYC & Company and the Department of City Planning, as well as other municipal agencies.
