Cubs Co-Owner Laura Ricketts Leads Group Buying Chicago Red Stars
An ownership group of Chicago businesswomen led by Laura Ricketts, co-owner of the Chicago Cubs and a minority owner of the Chicago Sky, have agreed to buy the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but The Washington Spirit sold for $35 million in early 2022. The sale is still pending and requires approval by the NWSL Board of Governors.
Also included in the Ricketts-led group is Ventas CEO Deb Cafaro, who is also a minority owner of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins; Tawani Enterprises President and CEO Jennifer Pritzker; Loop Capital Partner Sidney Dillard; and Impact Engine Partner and CEO Jessica Droste Yagan.
The deal signals a new chapter for Red Stars after former head coach Rory Dames resigned in 2021 amid allegations of emotional abuse by players. Then-owner Arnim Whisler later agreed to sell the team after he was fired as chairman. Chicago currently sits 11th in the NWSL standings.
