Cuba: Clear for Take-Off
By: Daniella Soloway
For the first time in more than 50 years, the Department of Transportation gave the green light for six airlines (American Airlines, JetBlue, Frontier, Silver Airways, Southwest and Sun Country) to fly to nine Cuban cities, including Camagüey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
Flight applications have yet to receive approval from Havana, but the DOT will make final flight selections within the quota to fly between the Cuban Capital and American cities.
In March, President Barack Obama visited, marking the first time an American president crossed the Cuban border since Calvin Coolidge in 1928. To travel to Cuba, U.S. citizens will need to gain approval which requires submitting their reason for the visit.
