CTA’s Red Line Revamp Will Close 2 Stations for 3 Years

Two stations along the Chicago Transit Authority’s Red Line will be closed for three years beginning in the winter of 2020-2021. The Red Line’s Lawrence and Berwyn stations will remain closed until the summer of 2024, although all four stations in the first phase of the Red and Purple Line Modernization Project will close when rebuilding work begins.

In addition to the Lawrence and Berwyn stations, the project’s first phase also involves the Bryn Mawr and Argyle stations. The project will make these stations, constructed between 1916 and 1923, larger and fully accessible to people with disabilities.

The other major aspect of the project will be a proposed bypass to carry Brown Line trains over the Red and Purple Line tracks north of Belmont, according to the CTA. The bypass is intended to reduce congestion and increase train speeds in the area. Work is scheduled to wrap up by the summer of 2021.
