CTA Advances on $4B Red Line Revamps
The Chicago Transit Authority has selected a joint venture of Walsh Construction Company and Fluor as preferred partner to design and build Phase One of the Red and Purple Line Modernization Program. The $2.1-billion capital project will be the largest in CTA’s history.
The project includes designing and building new elevated tracks along a 1.9-mile section in Chicago, including new bridges, support structures and existing tracks; upgrading 3.2 miles of the signal system; constructing a grade-separated bypass for the Brown Line at Clark Junction; and replacing four of the CTA’s busiest stations. The project will begin in the first quarter of 2019, and is scheduled for completion in early 2025.
CTA’s board also awarded a separate contract of $20.9 million to HNTB Corp. as program manager for the Red Line Extension. Cost of the 5.3-mile extension is estimated at $2.3 billion. No date has been set for starting construction.
