CPS Energy’s Ambitious Plans for Clean Energy Sources

CPS Energy, the San Antonio-owned-and-operated power utility, has ambitious plans when it comes to clean energy sources. The company announced it plans to generate about half its power from renewable energy sources by 2040 under what it has called a “flexible path” strategy. The power sources CPS wants to tap into include wind and solar.

The company has been slowly attempting to wean itself off fossil fuel, with approximately 22% of its power currently coming from renewable energy sources, and natural gas plants generating approximately 45%. Coal represents 18%, with nuclear making up the remainder.

“We will not be building a large base-load power plant again. I think we can say that pretty confidently,” CPS’ Cris Eugster said before a recent board meeting. The preference for expansion would be through renewables, in a way that creates affordable, reliable power, he added.
