Could State Impose Building Permit Moratorium?
The Huntington Beach Planning Commission unanimously voted this week against a zoning change that would have allowed 500 units of low-income housing in the city. Last year, virtually all of the city’s sites for low- or very-low-income housing were eliminated when the City Council changed its housing plans along two major corridors, Beach Blvd. and Edinger Ave.
The Community Development Dept. is seeking to correct a shortfall in state-required low-income housing sites that was caused by the change. Additionally, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has upheld a suit asking that the original higher density plan be reinstated.
Community Development officials say that if the city does not comply, the state could impose a moratorium on issuing building permits in the city.
