Corpus Christi Water Ban Lifted

A four-day ban on drinking water in Corpus Christi, TX has been lifted, after test results demonstrated no contamination from a chemical leak.  Mayor Dan McQueen said that residents could resume using the city’s water supply for drinking, cooking and bathing.

The Environmental Protection Agency tested 28 drinking water samples, following fears that Indulin AA-86, a corrosive asphalt-emulsifying agent, slipped into the water supply from Ergon Asphalt and Emulsions’ plant. Valero, which leases the plant to Ergon, reported “something white and sudsy” in the water at the plant.

This, in turn, led to city workers finding a chemical tank leak at the asphalt plant. Further investigation unveiled a backflow problem, prompting the city-wide ban on water usage, on Dec. 14. The ban impacted close to 300,000 residents.
