Corpus Christi to Federal Government: We Need $350M
The Port of Corpus Christi is the nation’s fifth largest port, and a very busy one. However, in order to attract the super-sized tankers and to boost ship traffic, the channel will need to be both deepened and widened. As such, the port has applied to Congress in hopes that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can provide $350 million to renovate the channel.
Port officials won Congressional approval in 2007 and 2014 to deepen and widen the channel. But it hasn’t been enough. Recent studies indicate that companies shipping crude oil are moving to larger vessels to reduce costs. As such, the Port of Corpus Christi needs the right tools to accommodate the larger vessels.
